Established in 1930, The medical school grew out of the Department of Medicine of Baku State University. During World War II the institute trained 2,082 doctors.  All further activities of the institute were associated with his name. In the fall of 2013, the University's Training and Surgical Clinic was opened. Azerbaijan Medical University is recognized & approved by the WHO (World Health Organization) and is listed on the WDOMS (World Directory of Medical Schools) portal. All Medical programs are recognized by the WHO and Medical bodies around the world incl. the National Medical Commission of India. (NMC). All Medical programs are taught in English.
